Information about Norwich City FC will be posted here.
Norwich City FC, also known as the Canaries, is the football team of Norwich city, in the county of Norfolk in the south of England and was founded in 1902. Since then they have played at their ground at Carrow Road.In the 2011/12 season they will play in the Premier League, having gained automatic promotion from the Championship League. Historically, they have reached the UEFA cup 3rd round and won the League Cup in 1962 and 1985.
In 1902 a group of players formed the team and they played their first match against Harwich and Parkeston that same year. An FA Commission soon ruled that the club should be classed as professional instead of amateur and Norwich started to play in the Southern League to bigger crowds. The club was originally named ‘the citizens’ but that nickname changed to ‘the canaries’ in 1907. This was because breeding and keeping the birds in the area was popular.
After the First World War the club was established again in February 1919, playing in the Third Division, where they achieved a middling performance. In the 1930s however the club became more successful and their 10-2 win against Coventry City among other games propelled them to the Second Division under the management of Tom Parker. In 1935 the club played their first match at Carrow Road with an attendance of 29,779.
Later in the 1971-2 season the Canaries won the First Division under Ron Saunders, playing at Wembley for the first time in 1973, where they lost the League Cup final 0-1 to Tottenham Hotspur. To 1989 the club bounced in between the second and first divisions. In 1992-3 Norwich entered the Premier League for the first time before finishing third. They then played at the UEFA Cup for the first time where they lost the third round to Inter Milan. It is interesting to note that during this Cup play Norwich was the only English team to beat Bayern Munich at the Olympic Stadium. John Deehan led the club to 12th place in the Premier League in 1993-4. In the season that followed after Norwich FC was relegated to the First Division. In 2003-4 the club won the First Division, but were relegated from the Premier League the next season. In 2009 under Paul Lambert they earned a promotion once more.
In the season of 1908 the now well-recognised colours of yellow and green were sported by players. The home kit is still the same green and yellow colour but the away kit has changed to white. A canary badge was designed in 1922 but recently a competition was held to design a new one. Andrew Anderson, a local architect won and the badge now consists of a canary sitting on a football with the City of Norwich Arms in the left-hand top corner. Carrow Road Stadium today seats 27,000. The club is traditionally a rival to Ipswich Town, at present, Norwich City are much the superior team, and have beaten Ipswich Town 4-1 and 1-5 in the 2010/11 season whilst on their way to securing their place back in the Premier League. Norwich City FC is a public limited company with shareholdings held in a majority by Delia Smith and her husband, Michael Wynn-Jones.
