Cricket is a well-loved sport in the Norwich area. There are three cricket pitches managed and maintained by the council at the parks of Britannica Barracks, Eaton Park and Woodrow Pilling Park, which can be hired for use. A cricket club at Sportsmark UEA is called Chapel Field CC and at Britannia Barracks there is a club called Feilden & Mawson Cricket Club. These clubs are for juniors and adults. Chapel Field CC was a club started by local Muslims in the Norwich area and named Chapelfield after the mosque of the same name in the area.
Sprowston cricket club situated to the north of Norwich and the clubhouse and pitch are well positioned to serve the local community. The clubhouse itself is non-smoking and is available for hire with a fully licensed bar. There are two cricket pitches which are rented out to a cricket club on Sundays as well as being used exclusively for Sprowston Cricket club. Four senior cricket sides are held on Saturday with two on Sunday.
The teams on Saturday are from various positions in the Norfolk Cricket Alliance and from the filter league, Norfolk Cricket League. The Sunday teams are from the Premier Division of the Mid-Norfolk Sunday League and from a friendly league. Cricket matches and training are held throughout the week at the pitches; increased interest from England’s victory at the Ashes has produced more interest in cricket amongst youngsters. Juniors also play 6-a-side competitions in winter.
The Norfolk Cricket Alliance has clubs all over Norfolk, one of which is in Norwich on Ferry Road. This club, called Norwich Cricket club, formed when the two cricket teams Ingham & District Cricket Club and Norwich Barelycorns Cricket Club decided to merge on 1st January 1999. Ingham once did very well in the Norfolk Alliance League and the Barleycorns won the League on three occasions and once merged won the East Anglian Premier League Trophy and the Stan Biss Trophy.
A cricket team called the Norwich Bystanders operate in the Norfolk Cricket League and also the Mid-Norfolk Sunday Cricket League. They are based in Norwich city centre at Dussindale Park and have their own clubhouse. Norwich & Coltisholl Wanderers Cricket club is in East Norfolk and have grounds at Barton Turf and Coltishall. 3 Saturday league sides operate from the club’s venue. The Lovewell Blake Norfolk Cricket Alliance Premier Division is the league the First XI team play in. The Second X1 are in division 5 of the same league. The Norfolk Cricket League is played in by the the 3rd XI. Weekly coaching for juniors is held at Barton Turf and the club has junior sides under 11, 13 and 15.
Swardeston CC is located south of Norwich and is the region’s oldest clubs with a history stretching back over 150 years. On Saturdays the club hosts four Saturday-sides and there are two Sunday teams with youth sections, (under 17, 15, 13 and 11) plus a woman’s section. The Swardeston CEYMS team play in division six of the Norfolk Alliance.
