Norwich is a city in the south of England that is in the county of Norfolk. Here there are plenty of sports to get involved in and the city has a variety of sports facilities, from natural parks to outdoor sports facilities and the Norman Centre in Mile Cross. There are 23 outdoor parks in Norwich and many of them have children’s play areas. Paddling pools are at Waterloo and Wensum parks and many of them have outdoor sports facilities. These include a BMX area, a cycle speedway, pitch and putt area, putting area, skateboarding area as well as sports pitches and courts.
The world-class BMX track at Sloughbottom Park is open all year available to the public free of charge. Here the Norwich Flyers BMX club provides training sessions and regional competitions. Two cycle speedway tracks in Norwich are at Harford Park and Eaton Park and involve speeding around a dust track on bicycles with no gears or brakes. At Eaton Park the Norwich Stars Cycle Speedway Club holds lessons and competitions. 18-hole putt and pitch courses are situated at Mousehold Heath and Eaton Park, where players can turn up and play without the need to book. A putting ground is open in summer at Eaton Park, where you can practise golf putting. A skateboarding park is a place for BMXers, inline skaters and skateboarders to practise all year round with a push-button lighting system on until 10pm is open at Eaton Park.
In Norwich the council has nine hard tennis courts, 10 grass tennis courts, free basketball facilities at 16 parks, eight bowls greens, three cricket pitches, one croquet lawn, fourteen five-a-side football pitches and four football pitches.
The Norman Centre in Norwich city centre is a sports and leisure facility that caters for all ages and runs groups for mums and toddlers, children’s dance, arts classes, junior martial arts, those in their fifties and for those kids aged nine to twelve. The gym is for experienced or beginners with knowledgeable staff who will create a fitness programme tailored to individuals. The centre also has a four rink bowls hall where the resident bowls club holds coaching sessions for all abilities and there are special facilities for disabled users. Table tennis, short tennis and badminton sports can also be done at the centre. At the Riverside Leisure Centre free swimming is for the general public. Here is a 25m swimming pool, a spa bath, a sauna, learner pool and steam room. There is a fully equipped gym and fitness studio for fitness classes.
An annual sports directory is available from the city council which has an a-z listing of sports clubs in Norwich, including canoeing clubs, dance clubs, fencing clubs, boxing clubs, gymnastics, hockey and golf. There are also groups for horse riding, ice hockey, martial arts, korfball, rugby, netball, scuba-diving, roller hockey, snow sports and squash. Triathlon, yoga and water-polo clubs are also listed. There are clubs for those disabled users who many wish to practise sports like basketball, bowls, tennis and swimming. A free Norwich sport and leisure discount card is for those who live in Norwich,who have a national bus pass, are under age 16 or who have a low income.
