Norwich Market

Information about Norwich market, which is the largest market in the country, will be posted here.

Norwich Market, A Place To Behold

Right in the centre of Norwich is the largest outdoor market in Britain. With more than two hundred stalls, this market offers something for everyone.

Built in the last half of the eleventh century, this place served merchants in William the Conquerer’s time. During the fourteenth century, Norwich grew to be the largest and richest city in England. It was a major trading hub, thanks to its proximity to the ocean, and the income from the market was given over to the city during that time. However, although Norwich was now rich, it did succumb to plague and famine (the Black Death) at just about the same time too with the population falling by half.

Georgian Times

During this era, the city became popular with travellers and it soon became popular with fashionable people too. Luxury shops sprung up around the market and along with this came the need for coaching inns.

Twentieth Century

After the First World War the authorities now decided to buy back the stalls on the market which had been in the hands of local merchants for centuries. After this, the market went under a major refurbishment scheme during the 1930s. This is when neat rows of stalls began to appear and a new City Hall was erected on the western side of the marketplace.

From this time on, there were few changes to the market until an update in 2006 which updated the decrepit state of the place which had been virtually untouched for decades.

Today

In the market today, and this is the largest Monday to Saturday market in Britain, there are many stalls which sell a whole range of goods. On one hand one can buy Asian foods, fresh meat, all kinds of cheeses, both English and foreign and fruit and vegetables from around the world. There is shellfish and seafood, wet fish and cooked fish and chips along with Chinese food too.

For the young ones out there, find alternative clothing and club wear, teenage fashion, footwear and underwear. Indeed, just about anything that is required can be found right here in this historical market place.

For Visitors

It is obvious then that this hub of the city has much to offer the locals and visitors alike. From here one can walk the canals and stop off for a cream tea or just hire a boat or bicycle for the day. One can even do the weekly shop while soaking up the history of the buildings nearby or just sit and people watch as the world goes by.

There are many tourist information spots here and there so for those who want to find out more about this fascinating city, or the market itself, just pop in and pick up some leaflets which should answer any questions that one would have.

Those who have limited mobility are well catered for here too so look out for this information at the tourist information offices as well.
