Information about river cruises in and around Norwich and Norfolk will be posted here.
Messing About On The River
The one thing that Norfolk is probably most famous for is its waterways. These range from canals, cut out from the ground by peat cutters in days gone by, to the 125 miles of navigable waterways that make up the Norfolk Broads, which empty into the sea on the east coast. All have leisure facilities to offer so for those who are feeling adventurous, come and give it a try.
Many people these days want to get away from extra busy lives that have become the norm, and what better way to do this than ‘messing about on the river’. Indeed, a cruising holiday is what peace and tranquility is all about and this is a great way to get the family together to chill out for a while.
There are all kinds of craft available, from canoes up to luxurious craft which can sleep a multitude of people. Those who choose to sleep on board have all kinds of facilities on hand from cookers and fridges to TV and linens etc so there is really no need to worry.
On arrival at the boat yard, the family will be shown around their boat and have several things explained to them. The daily turning of the grease screw for the engine, if applicable, and then a quick spin around the canal so that the captain can get a feel of the craft. Safety measures are explained too and the speed limit – yes, there is one! – so that the banks are not damaged from the wash of the boat. Then it is off into the wild blue yonder for that adventure of a lifetime.
Planning the Cruise
On the maps available at the boat yard, it is easy to see what distances can be covered before the inevitable turn around point arrives. This will obviously depend on how many days the boat is hired for so take note here and be realistic too. One cannot come back full speed because the river police will stop any wrong doers so take time to figure out the route.
Places to See
Along the canals and rivers are many sites to behold. Take along cycles for the family so that they can go into the country a little when they want to let off some steam. Or let the kids ride the canal paths while the boat is slowly making its way to the next watering hole.
En Route
Give the kids some history lessons by showing them ancient monuments and explain to them how the Norfolk Broads came in to existence. Sail into the heart of Norwich for some well needed supply stocking, and show them the history of Norwich City while there.
And Finally …
The idea here is to slow down, and after about two days of enforced slow sailing, one begins to feel the benefit of not rushing anywhere. Sleep is sounder, tempers are not quite so frayed and the kids and parents begin to bond again.
