Freewheeling Around Norfolk

For most of us, lying down on a sunny beach somewhere would seem to be the height of relaxation. However, for others, this would be the last thing that they would ever want to do. Getting out into the countryside atop two wheels is what these guys like to do and they get to see some unspoilt parts of the country at the same time.

All around Norfolk, made famous by its many miles of waterways, there are many bridle and cycling paths to tempt even those new to the sport. Cycling is one of those pastimes which allow people to explore places right off the beaten track. Norfolk is full of narrow lanes and coastal paths with vistas at every turn.

One of the well known paths is the Sustrans National Cycle Network which allows cyclists trouble free, stress busting fun along vast expanses of countryside along old railway lines and bridleways. Even if paths hit the road, these tend to be quiet lanes which see little traffic on any particular day.

Some Of The Routes

Peddlars Way – this is an ancient track which runs all the way from the Brecks, made of heathland, right across to the Norfolk coast line. Cycling is allowed on many parts of the Pddlars Way, although there is no cycling allowed on the Norfolk coast path section

Norfolk Coast Cycleway – this is a fifty nine mile stretch of pathways which passes through areas of outstanding beauty. Not only are there exceptional views, there is also the wildlife on show which would not be possible if the visitor came by car.

Broads By Bike Trails – these are shorter routes which traverse wonderfully picturesque countryside through the Broads National Park. Even circular routes will take the rider through small villages and deserted stretches of the Fens.

Bike It! – this is a series of nine maps which show routes through the South Norfolk area. These are downloadable maps which show everything from the wonderful pathways to bed and breakfast places along the route.

Thetford Forest – a magnificent place to experience off road cycling. It is in the heart of a lowland pine forest, the largest in Britain, and there are miles of trails suitable for even the most inexperienced rider.

Mountain bikes are for hire here at High Lodge Forest Centre and there are also organized bike tours on offer too. Take note that although there are family style rides here, the black route is really only for those with experience.

What Happens Here?

Cycling is so popular in the Broads and surrounding areas that there is a cycle hire facility in most places. They will even deliver the bikes to B & B’s and allow some boats to carry them on the roof for those forays into the local areas.

Norfolk also welcomed the Tour of Britain cycle race in 2010, and it is back again in 2011. This is the largest professional cycle race in the country and carried live coverage on TV and on the internet. Since this is considered to be the largest free spectator sport in the UK, it is said to have attracted about one million people to the roadsides alone!
